Green Manure is not just for Autumn/Winter, it can also be beneficial when used for intersowing between crops.
Yellow Trefoil is a low growing green manure that can be sown between taller growing crops such as Beans/Peas/Tomatoes/Sweetcorn.
This approach delivers many benefits:
- Helps to retain moisture during the summer months
- Suppresses weed growth
- Highly attractive to the pollinators
After the main crop has been harvested the Yellow Trefoil can be left in the ground throughout winter. The first frosts will knock it back thereby creating a natural layer of mulch, or it can be dug in.
A true wonder plant...and done naturally!
Another green manure alternative that can do the same job is White Clover. Here you can see it intersown with sweetcorn
