Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Cape Gooseberry Dwarf (Physalis pruinosa) produces a small round light orange berry with a sweet acidic taste. The berry is encased in a papery husk that envelops the fruit and looks very attractive. It is also known as the 'ground berry'.
The fruit itself can be used raw in fruit salads, cooked in desserts, jams or part-dipped in chocolate as an appealing eatable garnish. This compact version does best grown in a greenhouse in soil or containers. It can be grown outside in a very sheltered sunny spot but it does need good high temperatures to fruit successfully.
Cape Gooseberry Dwarf Vegetable Seed Information
|Seed Quantity:||Approx 100 seeds per pack.|
Full sun, preferably in greenhouse.
|When to Sow:||
February to April.
|How to Sow:||
Sow seeds into a seed tray on the top of good quality compost. Do not cover seeds with compost as they need light to germinate but they can be covered with a thin layer of vermiculite as helps keep seed in place. Keep indoors in heated propagator at 20°C. Seeds should germinate in 10-20 days and then reduce night-time temp to 15°C. Pot on when large enough to handle. Final pot size should be 40cm.
It is best to keep plants undercover as they require consistent high temperatures to fruit well. They may do well in a very sheltered sunny spot but do not plant out until risk of frost has passed.
Keep well-watered but do not over water when fruits have begun to form.
|Harvest:||July to September.|
