Chilli Pepper Bahian Sauce (Piri Piri) Seeds
Chilli Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Bahian Sauce (Piri Piri) Chilli Seeds are small glossy red fruits about 5cm in length and despite their size, they pack a punch, with a Scoville rating between 60,000 to 100,000. They originate from the state of Bahia in northwestern Brazil.
Chilli Pepper Bahian Sauce is a Capsicum frutescens which is a wild chilli pepper having genetic proximity to the cultivated pepper Capsicum sinense native to Central and South America. Pepper cultivars of C. frutescens can be annual or short-lived perennial plants. Flowers are white with a greenish white or greenish yellow corolla, and are either insect- or self-pollinated.
Typically, the pods are small and tend to have an ellipsoid-conical shape. Frutescens plants are compact with short stubby growth and a large number of flowers, making them an ideal choice for container gardening.
Capsicum frutescens is a PERENNIAL growing to 1m by 0.6 m. It is hardy to UK zone 9 and is frost tender. It is in flower from August to September. The species is hermaphrodite (which has both male and female organs).
Two sizes are seen, which sometimes have different names: the smaller ones are called Malaguetinha in Brazil, and as Piri Piri (a Swahili name) in Mozambique and in Portugal, though this name is now also used for a newer, derived African cultivar, the Piri Piri pepper, while the larger ones are called Malagueta in both Brazil and Portugal. They are not different varieties, just peppers of different maturities from the same plant.
If you are a fan of the famous Portuguese dish Piri Piri Chicken, or in fact favour a Nando's or two! then this is the chilli for you, enabling you to make a truly authentic peri-peri / pir-piri / pill-pill.
Handle peppers with extreme caution, keep out of reach of children and immature adults and always wash your hands after handling.
PLEASE NOTE - we do not recommend growing chillies on a windowsill, especially the hotter varieties. Chillies need a constant and consistent temperature to germinate and windowsills above radiators do not provide the ideal conditions.Bahian Sauce (Piri Piri) Chilli Seed Information
