Chilli Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia Chilli Pepper is a relative of Bhut Jolokia one of the Superhot strain of chillies recently discovered in Assam, India. It has the same pungency and heat levels as the Bhut jolokia but chocolate refers to its colour not its taste!
The chilli pods are irregular shaped, slightly wrinkled and chocolate brown in colour. They measure 5cm long by 3cm wide on a stocky plant that reaches 60-70cm tall. It is thought to register over a whopping 1,000,000 SHU so is one mighty hot pungent pepper.
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia is very productive, producing upwards of 40 peppers per plant. The chilli pods are great used fresh but can also be frozen, they can be dried but they do take a while to dry. We love to make a chilli jam with our fresh chillies and it produces a gorgeous rich, dark coloured sauce with a lovely smoky, fruity flavour. However it is really, really hot so chop chillies & eat sauce with care.
As with all the superhots they can be temperamental & difficult to germinate and can take up to a month and sometimes longer to sprout so don't discard them too soon thinking they have failed. They do however require consistently high temperatures and careful watering to germinate and whilst growing, so not the easiest to grow but sometimes we just love a challenge! Handle with extreme care and keep out of reach of children and immature adults!
