Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Cosmic Purple Carrots are an unusual variety with their deep purple outer skin and orange core. Well worth growing as brightens up the dinner plate.
These maincrop, conical shaped carrots with broad shoulders are a Danvers type which reaches between 15-20cm long. They have the usual sweet carrot flavour with a slightly spicy tang.
Carrot Cosmic Purple holds its colour when cooked, better than some other purple varieties although steaming rather than boiling gives better colour retention. Use raw & fresh for the best colour in salads or stir-fries! Baby carrots also look a real gourmet treat especially when mixed with yellow & orange varieties.
Carrot Cosmic Purple is returning to its natural roots as purple carrots can be traced back centuries to Persian wild carrots and images in Ancient Egypt. It was only in the 1600's when the Dutch developed the orange carrot from a white/yellow carrot that orange carrots became the norm.
Carrots are well known to contain beta-carotene this gives the veg its orange colour. Beta-carotene is a powerful anti-oxidant but medical research has proved that purple vegetables such as blueberries, purple sprouting broccoli, peppers and purple carrots also contain pigments called 'anthocyanins' which help protect the body.
Purple carrots have 28 times more anthocyanins than orange ones and these are believed to lower the risk of cancer, help weight loss, heart disease and tests are being carried out with Alzheimer sufferers. Looks like a gourmet treat when mixed with Solar Yellow Carrot and an orange carrot like Chantenay or Early Nantes.
Carrot Cosmic Purple Vegetable Seed Information
|Seed Quantity:||Approx 800 seeds per pack.|
Deep, fertile sandy soil free from stones is ideal. Don't grow on ground that has been manured in the last year as it causes forking. A sunny spot is perfect.
|When to Sow:||
March to August.
|How to Sow:||
Sow thinly, directly into a drill 1.5cm deep. Aim for a seed every 2.5cm to avoid the need for too much thinning and sow in rows 15cm apart. If you do need to thin do it at night when the carrot-fly is not around. Lightly cover the seed with fine soil and water carefully with a fine hose. Seedlings should appear at about 17 days.
Water at night and keep watered in dry periods. Try not to weed especially during the day as it may attract carrot-fly.
|Harvest:||June to October. Lift all remaining roots by October, remove soil from the roots and store in dry sand but do not allow the carrots to touch each other as it can cause rotting.|
