Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Beetroot White Detroit has unusual white round roots with all the usual beetroot flavour but none of the ‘bleeding’ and staining associated with its red cousins.
It is easy to grow and is best harvested at golf ball size when it will be young and tender with no hint of woodiness that can sometimes be attributed to larger beetroots.
Eating a white beetroot makes for an unfamiliar & novel experience but it’s flavour and texture is the same and it contrasts well mixed with other more colourful varieties such as Boltardy, Golden or Chioggia. Beetroot White Detroit is certainly worth a try!
Beetroot White Detroit Vegetable Seed Information
|Seed Quantity:||Approx 100 seeds per pack.|
Any, although sandy soil is particularly good but not freshly manured as it can cause forking. An open sunny spot is ideal or also great in a container.
|When to Sow:||
March to July. They are good to sow successionally through the season.
|How to Sow:||
Soak the seed in warm water for an hour before sowing (it helps germination), Sow thinly in rows, the rows should be 20cm apart. Cover lightly with 2.5cm of soil. Firm gently and water carefully. Seedlings will start to show 7-21 days.
Thin seeds to 10cm apart.
|Harvest:||June to October. 8-10 weeks from sowing, this is earlier for smaller baby beetroot. The tops can be removed when 5-8cm tall for attractive salad leaves. Twist off the leaves leaving a 2cm stalk and then the beetroot will not bleed. The leaves can be treated as 'cut & come again' leaves.|
