Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Carrot Solar Yellow are a deep yellow colour from outer skin through to inside core but still with the lovely sweet flavour and crunch associated with orange carrots.
Produces conical shaped medium length carrots which grow to between 15-20cm long. These Danvers shaped carrots have broad shoulders with a body that remains the same width down its length until it tapers to a point. They are a maincrop carrot and are ready to harvest from June to October.
Carrot Solar Yellow holds their colour when cooked colour retention is best when the carrots are steamed rather then boiled. They look fantastic as baby carrots especially when mixed with baby purple & orange carrots. Yellow carrots are very appealing when left raw in salads or for crudites.
Yellow carrots can be traced back many centuries but it was only in the 1600's that the Dutch experimented with a white/pale yellow carrot & developed the orange carrot that became the choice variety for the next few centuries. Yellow carrots contain Xanthophylls which help to protect the eye.
Medical research is hoping to prove they may help against Eye Cataracts and Age Related Macular Degeneration. Other Xanthophylls rich vegetables are Spinach and broccoli. Well worth a try and perhaps a feast for the eye in more ways than one!
Carrot Solar Yellow Vegetable Seed Information
|Seed Quantity:||Approx 800 seeds per pack.|
Deep, fertile sandy soil free from stones is ideal. Don't grow on ground that has been manured in the last year as it causes forking. A sunny spot is perfect.
|When to Sow:||
March to August.
|How to Sow:||
Sow thinly, directly into a drill 1.5cm deep. Aim for a seed every 2.5cm to avoid the need for too much thinning and sow in rows 15cm apart. If you do need to thin do it at night when the carrot-fly is not around.Lightly cover the seed with fine soil and water carefully with a fine hose. Seedlings should appear at about 17 days.
Water at night and keep watered in dry periods. Try not to weed especially during the day as it may attract carrot-fly.
|Harvest:||June to October. Lift all remaining roots by October, remove soil from the roots and store in dry sand but do not allow the carrots to touch each other as it can cause rotting.|
