Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Purple Sprouting Broccoli Santee F1 produces spears from June through to November. It does not require exposure to cold as some of the later varieties do and consequently it will crop in the same year it is planted.
It crops very early and cropping can be extended by treating as a 'cut & come again' crop ie harvesting regularly. It is not as hardy as the later varieties so will struggle in cold winters. Purple Sprouting Broccoli Santee F1 tastes lovely and rates up there with fresh asparagus for us. We steam it & then make Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's quick hollandaise recipe gorgeous!!
Purple Sprouting Broccoli is not readily available in the supermarkets, production costs are high as the spears have to be hand harvested and therefore it is expensive to buy. By growing your own not only will it be cheaper but the spears will be nice & fresh and crisp not that springy bendy stem you get when spears has been left too long on the shelf.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli Santee Vegetable Seed Information
|Seed Quantity:||Approx 25 seeds per pack.|
Like other Brassicas the ground should be rich and firm but not recently manured. A sunny position is ideal.
|When to Sow:||
March to May (outside) January to March (under cover).
|How to Sow: ξ||
Sow thinly in a seed-bed 1cm deep in rows 10cm apart. They can also be sown under cover in pots, 2 seeds to a pot, then remove the weaker one. Transplant outside May to June to final growing position, place 60cm apart. Added protection may be needed until risk of frost has passed. Sow a catch crop underneath like lettuce until the plants reach full size to fully utilize the plot.
Keep watered in dry periods. Add lots of organic matter as a top-dressing as they are hungry plants and this also helps to retain moisture. The broccoli will reach 80-100cm and will require staking, so it is best to support it with a short cane. Pigeons love the young shoots so cover with netting or tin foil on canes. Protect with netting to prevent bird problems & caterpillars.
|Harvest:||June to November, they are a cut & come again veg that will crop for a longer period if regularly harvested as this prevents it going to seed.|
