Chilli Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
African Birds Eye Chillies (Peri Peri or Piri Piri) are synonymous with Portuguese cuisine and these little chillies are used to make their hot spicy Peri Peri Sauce.
African Birds Eye chillies are small (1-2cm long by 0.5 - 1cm wide) and hot (reaching 1,000 - 225,000 SHU). They mature from green to red and lots of upright pods are produced on each plant that reaches between 50-100cm tall.
The Portuguese first took chillies from Mexico to Africa in the 1500's and this one now grows there in the wild too! The Africans then brought it back to Portugal where it has become a traditional sauce served with chicken or fish. We are now more aware of it due to restaurant chains like Nandos but it is well worth the effort to grow your own and make your own Peri Peri Sauce for BBQ's.
There is some confusion over the Birds Eye Chilli as it is used extensively in many other countries like Asia for oriental cooking and they are all very closely related. African Birds Eye Chillies have a long growing season before they start to fruit so it is best to start these seeds early if you want to get the best harvest. It can be pruned to reduce height and give a bushier plant before flowering of course.
