Vegetable Seeds from Sow Seeds Ltd
Broad Bean Stereo have incredibly sweet, nutty tasting beans and are delicious picked young and eaten like mange-tout.
Broad Bean Stereo are very easy to grow and produce dainty white flowers followed by large crops of pods that contain 4-5 juicy white/greenish juicy plump beans. The pods have an upright growing habit so makes picking easy.
Broad Bean Stereo received an AGM in 1999 for its performance in RHS Trials 'as a tender skinned variety' which means even when the beans are quite old there is no need to skin them. Perfect!!
Broad Bean Stereo Vegetable Seed Information
|Seed Quantity:||Approx 40 seeds per pack.|
Any, although rich, free draining soil is best. Lime if necessary in winter.
|When to Sow:||
March-May. Sow at monthly intervals to give a regular crop through the summer.
|How to Sow:||
Sow 5cm deep in a double staggered row 20cm apart. If planting another double staggered row plant 50cm apart. If the soil is moist they can be pushed into the ground or alternatively dig a little hole with a hand trowel. Sow a few spare at the end of the row, so these can transplanted if there are some failures. Seedlings will germinate within 7-14 days. Water and keep well watered.
They will need support so build a frame using bamboo canes and netting, and as the beans grow twine them through the netting. When the first beans begin to form, pinch out the top 8cm to encourage the plants energy into forming more pods. This also helps to discourage black-fly who love the tender shoots. Make sure crops are well-watered through out the season.
|Harvest:||3 months after sowing. These can be picked when mange-tout size or left to grow when the first pods reach 5-8cm. The smaller the sweeter. The pinched out tips can also be used in salads.|
