Overview

Tomato 'Roma VF' is the classic Italian plum tomato, it is delicious and makes one of the best passata sauces & soups as it contains very few seeds, has a low moisture content and thick flesh.

It is a semi-bush type so does not require pruning although it could do with staking / support to help hold the prolific amount of tomatoes produced. They crop over a 3-4 week period (longer than most bush types) so planning is required to make the most of the harvest, i.e making passata/soups/salsa and freezing extras. Also makes great tomato juice.

Can be grown inside or outside, and the 'VF' stands for its good resistance to the diseases verticulum and fusarium wilt.

Sowing months February, March, April
Site conditions Greenhouse or sunny sheltered spot.
How to sow Sow seeds thinly in seed trays of seed & potting compost or 2-3 seeds in small pots and cover lightly with a little compost. Firm compost gently and water carefully. Keep in heated greenhouse / propagator at about 15-20°C. Transplant into larger individual pots when 10cm tall. 'Harden off' plants for 3-4 days before finally planting them outside from May to June, at a spacing of 45cm between plants. It is best to plant deeply to a depth of 0.5cm below the seed leaves - this helps to give a nice sturdy plant. This variety can also be grown in a greenhouse in a large pot/greenhouse soil or grow bags.
Care Keep protected if frost is forecast with a fleece or a cloche. They require daily watering and feeding with a high potassium, tomato fertiliser once a week when the fruit has begun to set. The 'Roma VF' is a semi-bush type that will require a bit of staking and support as it produces a heavy crop of tomatoes and sprawls a bit. As a semi-bush tomato it does not require 'pinching out'.
Harvest July to August.
