Overview

Kale 'Black Tuscany' is a great easy care veg that is packed full of vitamins. It has a long harvest period from the summer through the winter (it is hardy to -15°C) to early spring when it will bolt and flower. The flowers can be eaten like 'purple sprouting broccoli.'

Kale 'Black Tuscany' has dark green 'savoy cabbage' like leaves that can be used as baby leaf salad ingredient or grown on for larger leaves to use like cabbage; sautéed, steamed or blanched. It has a peppery taste. It is best to treat as a 'cut & come again' veg & harvest leaves when young as older leaves become tough. (tip - remove the mid-rib before cooking as this takes longer to cook than the leaf).

It is part of the Brassica family so treat as such in your crop rotation plan.

Seed qty (approx) 200
Sowing months March, April, May, June, July, August
Site conditions Any, but add lots of good organic matter to planting hole.
How to sow Sow in modules or small pots, 1cm deep & water. Plant out when 12cm tall 50cm between each and 50cm between the rows, if large leaves are required. Plant seedlings closer about 10cm apart for baby leaf production. Plants will grow to 70-90cm tall. A spring sowing and a late summer sowing will keep you in Kale for the best part of a year.
Care Requires little maintenance apart from water in dry spells and pick leaves to ensure further production of young leaves. Wash leaves in water before using as whitefly can hide in the creases.
Harvest 3 months after sowing. June to March.
