Overview

Brussels Sprout 'F1 Wellington' produces a heavy crop of tasty dark green buttons. It is winter hardy and the stalk stands up well to the weight & weather.

It is ready to harvest at a time when there is little else in the garden and as a late variety crops for a long period - from December to March. Sprouts are a must for Xmas dinner and this variety will reliably crop for that special day (but remember sprouts are not just for xmas!!!!)

Sprouts can be harvested as & when needed a little at a time or if the top 'leafy head' is cut off in October in one go, the sprouts will be all ready to mature at once usually at Christmas. A catch crop can be sown under the sprouts such as quick growing salad leaves or swiss chard.

Try the delicious Brussels Sprout soup recipe (Delia Smith) it sounds very strange but actually tastes delicious and I've tried on friends who are not keen on Brussels but love the warm, creamy, nutty taste of this soup. Great way to use up a sprout glut.

Seed qty (approx) 50
Sowing months March, April
Site conditions Full sun, fertile soil, sheltered site. Likes a soil with high pH so add lime to soil before planting if it is low pH (acid). Grow after Legumes in your crop rotation plan.
How to sow Sow 2 seeds 1cm deep into a pot/module of compost. Remove weaker seedling if both grow. Plant out when seedlings are 15cm high, 75cm apart. Plant closer if smaller buttons are required. Firm the soil well around plant base. (Seeds can also be sown into prepared seed bed in late March to mid April, in rows 15cm apart and then transplanted when 15cm tall into final position 75cm apart).
Care Don't need much just keep watered in dry periods: to prevent windrock plant firmly by treading the soil and stake plant well as they are shallow rooting.
Harvest December - March (about 36 weeks).
