Overview

Borage is an annual herb with pretty little vivid blue star shaped flowers and hairy grey/green leaves. It is very easy to grow and will reach a height of 30-50cm.

The leaves can be added to salads and taste like cool cucumber; the pretty flowers can be frozen in an ice cube to add a splash of luxuriousness to a Pimms or just used to dress up a salad.

It does self-seed very easily which in this case could be seen as an advantage but just deadhead to remove flowers before they set seed if you don’t want a carpet of borage.

Borage is loved by bees as its flowers are so nectar rich and this makes it an excellent companion plant as it draws insects to it & the surrounding crops – good next to tomatoes as helps with fertilisation!

Seed qty (approx) 1000
Sowing months February, March, April, May
Site conditions Prefers poor light well-drained soil in a sunny position but can cope with clay. If the soil is too rich borage may grow too tall & straggly rather than bushy & full of flowers.
How to sow Sow into small pots from February keep undercover (15°C) and plant out after last frosts – seeds will take approx 7 days or direct sow outside from end of April to May some added protection from cold may be required. Seeds will take approx 2-3 weeks to germinate.
Care Remove flowers before setting seed as it self-seeds very easily unless you want lots of new seedlings.
Harvest May - August.
