Cerinthe major 'Purpurescens' is a gorgeous hardy annual that has waxy blue-green foliage and tubular purple flowers that hang down inside deep blue bracts. It looks very exotic but is very easy to grow & copes perfectly well in borders or containers and makes an excellent cut flower.

Cerinthe major 'Purpurescens' self-seeds very easily so once sown new seedlings may appear every year. It reaches a height of 45cm with a spread of 30cm.
Its common name is 'Honeywort' and it is loved by bees.

Site conditions Sunny, well-drained soil.
How to sow Either sow seed undercover (Feb-Apr) on top of a tray of moist compost & cover with a thin layer of fine compost. Keep at 10-15°C. 'Pot on' into 8cm pots when seedlings are large enough to handle. Plant out in April, spacing plants 30cm apart.

Alternatively sow seed thinly direct (Apr-May) into a well-prepared bed. Lightly cover with a thin layer of soil. Keep area moist until seedlings appear. When seedlings are large enough to handle, thin to 30cm apart.
Care Just keep weed free. Water in dry spells.
