Overview

Carrots are one of the best tasting veg to pick fresh from your garden. Carrot 'Early Nantes 2' will not disappoint as it has a lovely sweet flavour with very little core and is a blunt end variety that can reach a length of 15cm. It is a 2nd early/maincrop variety.

It can be direct sown outside from Feb to August, but early sowings shouldn't be sown until the soil has warmed up. Carrot seeds won't germinate if it is too cold (below 10°C.) A cloche could be used to help warm up the soil.

Carrot 'Early Nantes 2' can be sown under cover from Jan - Feb in root-trainers and very carefully transplanted out when the carrots measure no longer than 2.5cm & the soil has warmed up. (However it is better to sow carrot seed direct to the soil rather than transplant seedlings as the roots can be easily damaged).

Sow seed thinly to reduce the need for thinning as carrot-fly are attracted by the sweet smell. It is considered good companion planting to sow rows of carrots in between rows of onions as the smell of the onions puts off the carrot-fly - a lot of onions are required though but worth a try.

Site conditions Deep, fertile sandy soil free from stones is ideal. Avoid ground that has been manured in the last year as it can cause forking. A sunny spot is perfect.
How to sow Indoors:Sow seed thinly in polytunnel or greenhouse, directly into a drill 1.5cm deep in rows 15cm apart. Lightly cover the seed with fine soil and water with a fine hose. Seedlings should appear at about 17 days. If you do need to thin do it at night when the carrot-fly is not around and aim for a carrot every 5-7.5cm.

Outdoors: Sow seed very thinly, directly into a drill 1.5cm deep in rows 15cm apart. Lightly cover the seed with fine soil and water carefully with a fine hose. (A cloche can be used to help warm up the soil in early spring as seed can€™t germinate below 10°C.) Seedlings should appear at about 17 days. If you do need to thin do it at night when the carrot-fly is not around and aim for a carrot every 5-7.5cm. Can also sow in long pots and harvest as baby carrots.
Care Water at night and keep watered in dry periods. Try not to weed during the day as it may attract carrot-fly.
Harvest May to October. Lift all remaining roots by October, remove soil from the roots and store in dry sand but do not allow the carrots to touch each other as it can cause rotting.
